FREELANG Dictionary - Installation Manual |
There are two files to download and install: the program, and a word list (or several word lists).
Tips for downloading:
- When you download a file, make sure you know where it goes on your computer, because you will have to find it and double-click on it.
- Before downloading a file, please take note of the file size, so as to make sure that the downloadig has completed successfully. Good websites (like this one :-)) always provide the size of the files to download.
- If the download was interrupted, try to download again. But be careful, sometimes the corrupted file is kept in memory (this is a common process on the Web, things you see are kept in memory so as to be displayed faster when you see them again) and you just download the incomplete file again. To solve the problem, delete your temporary Internet files, or just be patient before trying to download again.
Our dictionary program is compatible with all versions of Windows, but it has been designed more specifically for Windows XP.
Note to Windows Vista users: in order to run properly (i.e. reversing the list), the dictionary needs to write data into the dict.ini file which is in the installation folder of the dictionary. Please make sure you have the rights to enable this operation, or install the dictionary in a partition or in a folder on which you have full rights. You can also right click on the shortcut, open the Properties dialogue box, go under the Compatibility tab and check the option to set the program permanently to administrator priviledges.
Note to Windows 95/98 users: if you can't install our program, please download our previous version.
Freelang dictionary only runs with Windows (any version). It is a stand-alone program, it doesn't integrate into other applications like Internet Explorer or Microsoft Word. It is a simple bilingual dictionary, not an automatic text translator.
Installing our program and a list is very easy:
- Download the program installation file
- Download a word list installation file
- Double-click on the program installation file (nothing spectacular happens, it's normal)
- Double-click on the word list installation file, choose the same folder as the program (or just accept the default folders)
- Use the icon created in your Start menu to launch the dictionary
Depending on the word list you install, you may have to install a special font or Windows Multilanguage Support. See each dictionary's page for specific instructions.
3. Installation of an update |
Installing an update is as easy as installing a list for the first time. But the new list will replace your old one, so if you had added some words to the list, or if you had corrected some entries, everything will be lost.
To avoid that, please contact us. We will tell you how to send us your word lists, so that everyone could benefit from your updates.
4. Uninstallation of the dictionary |
Our dictionary doesn't come with an automatic uninstallation, so to remove the program you have to manually delete the dictionary folder (C:\Program Files\Dictionary, usually) and the icons that were created in your Start menu (right click on the folder, hit delete).
The dictionary doesn't write anything in Windows registry, so you don't need to go there.
If you want a 100% clean uninstallation, also remove the [dictionary] section in your Win.ini file. Leaving it is harmless, though.
5. Before contacting us... |
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions, just make sure you have read this page, as well as the FAQ (answers to frequently asked questions).
If you have a problem with the dictionary, please describe it precisely. Tell us what version of Windows you are using, what language list you are trying to install and how you have done so far. The more precise the description is, the sooner you will get an answer. We receive a lot of emails each day and we reply in our free time.
Thank you for your understanding!
